CEDAR RAPIDS–The state fined Emeritus at Silver Pines $13,000 and listed a number of improvements that must be made. The biggest issue is that the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals says Silver Pines falsely portrays itself as an assisted living center.
Among the numerous problems, the state says Emeritus at Silver Pines is advertising that it can provide high level medical care – when it can’t and isn’t even licensed to.
70-year-old Carl Herkner was once a patient at the Cedar Rapids Emeritus at Silver Pines.
“I felt real good about it. They treated me really well,” said Carl Herkner.
He says his two-year stint was doctor ordered.
“I had prostate cancer and they didn’t want me to come back home. So I came back here and they were highly recommended,” said Herkner.
In a 54-page report, the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals says the nursing home falsely represented itself to patients and medical professionals.
The report reads “…the facility failed to accurately reflect {itself} as a Residential Care Facility. Instead…as…an Assisted Living Facility.”
The state says Silver Pines is not licensed to provide high levels of medical care—only personal assistance and supervision. So, according to the state, Herkner’s prostate cancer care and care for 17 current patients is beyond what Silver Pines could have or should have provided.
The facility released this statement saying it “…is working diligently to correct the deficiencies identified in the survey.”
Seventeen lesser violations for things such as training issues and upkeep of medical records were also in the report. There were 14 similiar violations back in March.
But Silver Pines says “…we will meet all the state’s requirements and achieve full compliance.”
It’s something Herkner says he’s sure of.
“I have no complaints they did really good with me,” said Herkner.
The state fined the facility and ordered the owners to hire a new administrator, citing that the old one wasn’t qualified for that position.
